Was a very busy little umbrella store … with many fancy umbrellas!

At the very back of this umbrella store, lived a little umbrella named Mimi. But, Mimi wasn’t fancy at all… in fact, she was just a plain black umbrella. But Mimi had a secret, which, made her special… very special indeed.

On rainy days, lots of people came into the umbrella store to buy, well …umbrellas! And the shopkeeper would always show them his fanciest umbrellas”….

….”But, the shopkeeper never showed plain little Mimi to anyone… and no one even asked for her.
So, she just lived quietly at the back of the store, waiting for the right person to come along.”….

Does the right person come along? Does Mimi ever get to leave the store? What made Mimi special? What is her SECRET?

I am not telling till some one publishes this story… till then.. here are some illustrations/sketches of work in progress.

  1. Love the concept, and admire the way you capture people in motion! The little girl’s blue dress looks especially visually interesting! Love how the line work just breathes so much life into it!

  2. Aditi,
Your artwork is 2B – Bold and Brilliant! The architect (trained not practiced) in me loves the bold but simple lines. The Indian that I still am (even after living in Canada for 17+years) wants to drink the brilliant colours.

    1. Hi,
Thanks, Radhika! Looks like we are birds of the same feather – with degrees in Architecture and spent our formative years in India – I got both my undergrad and grad degrees in Architecture – and I did work in that industry for a while! And, Yes! being an architect and growing up in India does inform my work! I love lines (the concept of ligne claire) and color!

    1. Thanks! If you click on each of the first two images, you will be able to see that the first one has some baskets of umbrella strewn across the floor, in addition to the gazillion other umbrellas on the ceiling and shelves. I am trying to figure out if i should leave the baskets in or take them out.
