Mangoes, Mangoes Everywhere, Yet Not One For Me to Eat

Summer is almost over, as are the monsoons. The mangoes are most definitely gone, but here I am, still trying to snag one from the tree in the backyard of my childhood. There is nothing more delicious than a mango in the middle of the blistering heat of an Indian June. If this national fruit of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh can’t bring us together, I don’t know what can. Happy 70th birthday to India.

  1. This sketch is BEAUTIFUL (as always)!! Love the way you’ve captured the girl’s hope of ‘capturing’ a yummy mango. I grew up in metros (Delhi & Mumbai), so, no scope to mango hunt…..lucky you! And yet, this took me down memory lane as my favourite thing to sketch (in childhood) was a girl with long braids sitting on a swing…..hee, hee, inner child, I guess. 😁 🍑 = this post is peachy! Sorry, iPad doesn’t include mangoes in emojis. ☹️

    1. ah ha ha about the girl w braids… i grew up in a small town – so my life was really “free-range”.. we cd be out all day – only rule was to be back before dark and when we were a bit older – even that was out of the window – but our neighbours all knew each other. That girl on a swing with the braid – I am tempted to make one now. That was me every evening – the swings were under a gulmohar tree and every time would try to se how high I cd go so i cd touch the branches with my feet. Of course, as I was growing, I eventually could. What an exciting day that way 🙂
